What is it about the red carpet that's so fascinating? Although the glitz and glamour is definitely eye-catching, there's so much more than that. Our #JJ team loves drawing inspiration from the latest red carpet style. Carpet looks set trends for the season to come, whether it's simple, grandiose, statement or chic. There's something about everyone's look that can be picked apart. We want to quickly run our #JJ ladies through some of our top style takeaways from recent red carpet events.
First things first, red carpet fashion really depends on the event. For example, the MTV Music Awards can get away with risqué, out-of-the-box, eccentric pieces, while the Academy Awards speaks well to classic jewels.
Ready to make your style red carpet worthy? Follow these five rules.
Rule #1: Don't be a copycat.
It's not always about what other people are doing. As a matter of fact, it's not even about what other people have done. It's about what you want to do. Pick jewelry that represents you. Don't copy someone else's look. Simply take inspiration and make it your own. Be original. Be unique. You are one of a kind, and your look should be an extension of this theme.
Rule #2: It's not always about what you're wearing. It's about what you choose to leave out.
For example, let's say you're wearing a gown that has a deep v-neck. Now, do you really need to wear a gaudy statement necklace with that, or should you just let your natural neckline speak for itself? Definitely the latter.
Rule #3: Don't be expected.
Let's say you haven't found a necklace that really speaks to you. On the same front, earrings and bracelets just aren't really your thing. Why not rock a statement cocktail ring, along with a glamorous hair piece? Do you. Don't wear pieces because you feel obligated. You will feel uncomfortable, and not look confident as a result.
Rule #4: Dress for an occasion.
Your life is an event. Dress accordingly. There really is no such thing as being overdressed. Wherever you go, show up - style wise. Don’t let your surroundings or people in your life convince you to “dress down” or hold back. Your style is a means of self expression. Let your inner goddess shine through. Don't apologize for who you are.
Rule #5: Stay parallel to your squad.
Whenever possible, stay in line with your squad’s style. For example, if you’re going out, and your friends or mate are following a certain theme, try to be complimentary with this look. You also don't want to stick out like a sore thumb. You want to be the center of attention, but in the best way possible.
Want a bit more advice? Here’s some tips from our favorite red carpet divas.
"Tailoring is everything! Everything should be tailored to your body. I'm not tiny, but my body type is not like anyone else's. Get a size up and bring it in so it can be taken in in the right places. It's really important."
"Wear something that's fitted, but not too tight. You don't want to be that weirdo who can't sit down. And don't match your shoes to the color of your dress-that's very 1990s prom."
"My mother always said to go classy, simple, and understated. Sure, I like to take some fashion risks here and there, but for the most part I like to go classic and timeless-that way you can never go wrong. Thanks Mom!"
